Nearly 12 centuries ago, a territory, which covers approximately 325,000 square kilometers, saw the birth of the most refined and highly developed civilization in pre-Hispanic America. The Mayas, who also settled in what are now Guatemala, El Salvador and Belize, inhabited the lands that form the present-day states of Quintana Roo, Yucatan, Campeche, Tabasco and Chiapas. Cancun's fame for beauty is well deserved and has a long tradition. In the 1970's Mexico's biggest resort complex began to grow transforming Cancun into one of the most attractive resorts in the world with its powdery white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters.
Because of the growth of the resorts and vacation attraction along the coasts of the Yucatan, people from the interior are moving to the resort areas by the 1000's. This opens up the possibility of a great evangelistic opportunity and church growth. The people are very open to the gospel. We seek to start 100 new churches, a Bible Institute and strengthen the existing Baptist Churches already in the Yucatan.
The National Baptist Convention of Mexico has a goal to strengthen the churches of the Yucatan and plant new churches. In the country of Mexico, there are 2,444 counties, 1991 have no Baptist Church. Just in the Yucatan Peninsula, there are 90 counties that have no Baptist Church. They have a goal to plant a church in each of these counties. They need the help of the Georgia Baptist Convention to accomplish this important task.
They have 141 church planters being trained in the Yucatan Peninsula that will be ready to start this important work by June 2007. The churches and associations of the Georgia Baptist Convention can play an important role in this church planting movement by partnering with one of these planters to reach a county for Christ.

The Yucatan-Georgia Partnership has 3 main goals:
1. Evangelism: with existing churches and new church starts. Prayer walking, tract and Bible distribution, sports camps, revivals, personal evangelism, ESL, puppet ministries, backyard bible clubs, VBS, face painting, children, youth, women, men ministries and open air preaching and gospel singing are just a few ways to participate in evangelism.
2. Leadership Development: thru the Bible Institute, which will help existing churches and new church starts.
3. Construction: many of the existing churches need help in completing their own churches; help with new ministries and new churches as they are planted in un-reached areas. Light construction can also be used as an open door for evangelism by performing some act of kindness or improvement in a neighborhood or village. Most will need financial help with construction.
We are already seeing a lot of interest with our Georgia Churches in
developing partnerships with the people of the Yucatan. Maybe God is
leading you, your church or association to be part of this great
harvest. Read God's Plan to Reach the World: Acts 1:8. Contact Mission Volunteers at the Georgia Baptist Convention for more information. 1-800-746-4422 or 770-936-5436.
