A few years ago, I played for a wedding. That’s not unusual. Hundreds reading this article have played for, or sung at, or officiated in weddings, many weddings. But, this one was DIFFERENT, really DIFFERENT! At this wedding musicians, preacher, wedding party, were all in place, doing what musicians and preachers and wedding parties do in weddings. The wedding party processed into the chapel, followed by the bride. The bride, a Georgia girl, and the groom, a young man from Nigeria, had met while working in Japan. They had fallen in love and married in a civil ceremony, as required in Japan, but Lynn wanted a wedding in her home church, with friends and family in attendance. And this was THE DAY!
It was a pretty standard wedding, such as I had attended before…EXCEPT there was no groom!! (His long applied for visa had not yet come.) So, at this “standard” wedding, somebody welcomed the guests via cell phone, and the same voice answered “I do,” and “I will” at the appropriate times…by cell phone, amplified by a microphone, of course! And, while we couldn’t see him, and though we’d never heard his voice, we were all fully convinced that Thunde was real, and that the voice we heard over that cell phone was that of the real Thunde from Nigeria.
But, what if Thunde really WASN’T real? What if Lynn had gone through with the wedding to avoid having to confess that she was a jilted bride? Why did all of us, guests and wedding party alike, believe that he truly exists, and that he would have been there if he could have?
We believed Lynn because she was RADIANT! We had not met Thunde. We had not heard his voice. But SHE HAD! She knew him personally; she had heard his voice. She had come to love him deeply, and she believed with all her heart that Thunde would come from Japan to take her back there, where they would spend their lives together. And her testimony was convincing!
I am a part of the Bride of Christ. I know Him. I love Him. I recognize when He is speaking to me. I believe with all my heart that He is coming for me some day, to take me to be with Him for all eternity! A huge question comes to mind. As I process down the aisle of my life, is there ANYTHING about me which would testify to the fact that I am betrothed? Lynn radiated her confidence that Thunde is REAL. Upon becoming acquainted with me, can folks KNOW that I am in a covenant relationship with the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, and that He is REAL? Is my life one which would cause others to want to be a part of His Bride?
People are watching…and so is HE!
