I read about a guy who came to church late. He walked in right near the end of the service. He said to an usher, “Is the sermon done yet?” The usher answered wisely. He said, “The sermon has been preached, but it has yet to be done.”
In James 1:19, James writes, “Everyone should be quick to listen.” And a few verses later he adds, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” Someone has well said, we need to acknowledge the importance of listening, the possibility of deception, and the necessity of obedience!
Long before Michael Jordan was promoting tennis shoes, God was saying, just do it! Many centuries before there was a Nike Company in Seattle, indeed before there was a Seattle, before there was a goddess, Nike, in Greek Mythology. God was saying, just do it!
Centuries ago God said to a man named Noah, “Noah, the world is counting on you. If there is to be a future, it will be because you do what I tell you to do. Build an ark. Just do it! To Abraham, God said, “Go to a place that I will show you later, just do it! And he did and as an old man he left everything familiar and went out by faith to serve God. To a 80 year old sheepherder, on the backside of nowhere, God told Moses, “You go to Egypt and speak for me. Go to the Pharaoh of Egypt and tell him to, “Let my people go. Moses, just do it!” And he did.
And all through Scripture you can find these kinds of examples of people who were told without much reason other than that God said, just do it! And they did. To a handful of mostly uneducated and unimpressive fishermen of Galilee, the Lord said, “Go into all the world and make disciples. Just do it! And they turned their world right side up.
