Members or missionaries? Often times we spend our time talking about our church members. I believe that could well be one of the problems we have created with a mental concept. As I think of the early church, I wonder if their concept could have been on being members or missionaries; specifically, “Church Missionaries” instead of “Church Members”. In our country today, we too easily conceive of membership as simply meaning we belong to something. When we think of that, we may have the mindset of some clubs where dues may or may not be required and where attendance is optional. That mind-set or “mental model” would surely define what being a church member means to many in our society.
I believe Jesus called us to be “Church Missionaries” rather than simply “Church Members”. The word missionary describes what we are to be and what we are to be doing. When God saved us, He saved us for a particular purpose and with a particular plan for our lives. I am so thankful that God allows us the privilege and has given us the responsibility to be involved in global redemption.
May God help us to change our mental model from that of simply being a church member to understand the greater responsibility of being church missionaries.
