It’s Sunday morning (it could be Wednesday evening) as you pull into the parking lot of your church. There are four teenage boys there riding skateboards on the sidewalks. They have baggy pants, tattoos and hats on backwards. Stop. what is your first reaction? What is going through your mind? What you are thinking is largely affected by your mental models?
Mental models are how we think. They are how we view and look at things. For instance, you might think, “If one of those kids fall and break a leg we’re looking at a lawsuit.” You could respond by telling them they need to find somewhere else to ride church is about to begin. OR you could stop and ask them about their skateboard and how they got started riding. You could ask them to show you a trick. Hey, you could invite them to come in. Now they probably won’t but you could ask. Now think about this. What about creating a park or a space somewhere on the property for them to ride. What about finding someone in the church (youth minister, etc) to start a small group for them.
As a Great Commission Resource Center all ministries of the church are designed to lead to Global Redemption. A GCRC church thinks in terms of how do we reach this affinity. How do we reach ANY affinity?
Caution: The longer we are a part of a church culture our immediate response is how do we make them look like us, act like us, talk like us and be like us. They are not us and probably don’t care to be like us. God made them like them. Let’s meet them where they are and lead them to Jesus. It may take time, it will take patience and it will definitely take love.
Regional State Missionaries seek to develop relationships with associational missionaries, pastor, and staff, networking with them in order to minister, create a cohesive spirit, and support cooperative work among all churches. Three Regional State Missionaries are available to assist churches. As a field-based ministry, they have the availability of all the resources of the Georgia Baptist Mission Board to assist associations, churches, pastors, staff, and church leadership. Offices are located in Augusta, Valdosta, and Monroe.
