Moving Forward in the Power of Christ: An interesting map is on display in the British Museum in London. It’s an old mariner’s chart, drawn in 1525, outlining the North American coastline and adjacent waters. The cartographer made some intriguing notations on areas of the map that represented regions not yet explored. He wrote: “Here be giants,” “Here be fiery scorpions,” and “Here be dragons.” Eventually, the map came into the possession of Sir John Franklin, a British explorer in the early 1800s. Scratching out the fearful inscriptions, he wrote these words across the map: “Here is God.”
There are many “unknowns” before us all. Corrie Ten Boom once stated: “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.” Things are changing all around us. The way our country is heading, future generations will not know the country as we know it today. The same issue relates to church dynamics.
Changes in the economy, demography, and culture provides challenge and opportunity. Through our trust in Christ, we will be ready and used in significant ways to move forward in our proclamation of the Gospel. It is during times of change that the greatest opportunities present themselves. “Trust in the Lord with all thy heart and lean not on thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths (Proverbs 3.5).” Are the days challenging? Indeed, they are. As His people, let us seize the moment and launch out in bold faith—moving forward in the power of Christ.
