The following post is written by guest blogger, Stacy Dyer, Consultant in Church Revitalization, GBC: Starting The Right Ministry For Your Church
John Mark Clifton, a revitalization pastor, made this statement: “Go to the local convenient store in your area, if your church does not look like the folks going in and out of the store you are not reaching the people of your community.” That comment grabbed me and I was glad to know we were reaching that group of people and we did it in a unique way. We recognized that in the mountain area of north Georgia where I served as pastor we had a large group of people who loved to hunt and fish and boat and cycle and golf and many other outdoor activities. We set our sights on reaching these individuals. We started small and did outings for kids using fishing events, hunting trips inviting lost friends and taking kids from single parent homes. We organized the ministry and held monthly meetings to plan for the work and celebrated the victories we were having along the way. We had a monthly devotion time and looked into God’s word at every meeting. It became evident to us that we could reach a larger audience through television as five generations we could identify used television as a source of entertainment and information. We started small in our area on the local cable channel and on the internet. Now the television ministry of Xtreme Christian outdoors is on a nationwide broadcast schedule and is available in millions of homes worldwide sharing the Gospel in every addition that we produce and broadcast. All of this started as a result of a small rural church who believed a God sized vision and people really got involved. You see all things are possible with God and he can do great and mighty things through you and your church wherever you are at. It does not have to be outdoor ministry it can be done through various avenues that meet the needs of your specific area. I would encourage you to begin to pray about starting The right ministry for God to reveal the needs in your area. Then I would advise you to surround yourself with people who have a vision and desire to win the lost around you. I believe when God gives a leader vision he will affirm that vision to others around you. Then I encourage you to pursue that vision and see what God can do. Starting The right ministry can be a little overwhelming at first, but watch God fulfill his promises as you pray and depend on him to provide.
