10 Things That Surprised Me About These Churches: Part #14
This is a series of insights gleaned from surveys and interviews with the most effective and fastest growing churches of the Georgia Baptist Mission Board in reaching and keeping people through Sunday School and Small Groups.
#3 – Question #10: Does your Sunday School/Small Group ministry have a purpose or mission statement?
I’ve promoted the process of churches developing a mission/purpose statement for their Sunday School and/or Small Group Ministry. I’ve preached messages and I’ve conducted seminars on the subject and even written books addressing how important having a formalized mission statement is to the health of the Sunday School/Small Group Ministry. Well I guess its not as important as I thought! Only 54% of the fastest growing churches have a formalized mission/purpose statement for their Sunday School/Small Group Ministry. I really thought more of these churches would have a mission statement for the Sunday School.
These fastest growing churches may not have a mission statement but just about all of them have some type of church-wide statement that guides all the ministries of the church. If your church has a mission/purpose statement for your Sunday School/Small Group Ministry don’t abandon it. Keep it in front of the people and use to guide your efforts as well as using to evaluate your effectiveness.
These fastest growing churches may not have a formalized statement but they thoroughly understand and communicate a holistic vision for their classes/groups. When communicating the purpose/mission of their Sunday School/Small Group Ministry these churches used the following words most often: fellowship, great commission, Bible study, reaching, connect people, Jesus, teaching, and relationship with Jesus.
The surprise was that almost half of the Fastest Growing Churches don’t have a mission/purpose statement for their Sunday School/Small Group Ministry. The thing that was not a surprise was that ALL of these churches and the Groups Ministry focused on the right things.
