10 Things That Surprised Me About These Churches: Part #20
This is a series of insights gleaned from surveys and interviews with the most effective and fastest growing churches of the Georgia Baptist Mission Board in reaching and keeping people through Sunday School and Small Groups.
#9 Question #42: Do MOST of your classes/groups have an up-to-date prospect file? These are the fastest growing churches in Georgia and half of them said that most of their classes/groups don’t have a prospect file. If the growing churches don’t have prospect files then it’s a pretty good assumption that most of the classes and groups in the rest of the churches don’t have prospect files.
In a recent report entitled “The Top 10 Reasons Salespeople Fail”, the number one reason was “Most salespeople don’t prospect efficiently, effectively and enjoyably.” The business world knows that in order to make a sale there most be an identified list of potential customers. The successful salesman enjoys identifying prospects and then building a relationship with them. In the fastest growing churches only 53% of these churches responded that the majority of their classes/groups have an up-to-date prospect file. This could be the reason for the lack of baptisms being connected to the efforts of the classes/groups.
The reason why classes/groups don’t have a prospect file is not because their church doesn’t have a prospect file. The church not having a prospect file could be relational to the class/group not having one but its not causative. The main reason; and causative reason, for classes/groups not having a prospect file is that the individual members of the class/group don’t have a prospect file!
Its been reported by several reports that 80%-90% of Christians in North America never talk about their faith with others. Can you imagine what would happen if only half of the members in our classes/groups began to share their faith? We would have Revival and Spiritual Awakening on the scale that we’ve been praying for!
Pastors, let’s make the commitment to equip our members to share Jesus. Leaders, let’s make the commitment to have our members to identify those they know that are in need of Jesus. Members, let’s make the commitment to develop a prospect list for our classes/groups.
