Back in the 1990’s Tombstone Pizza ran commercials asking What Do You Want on Your Tombstone? Recently I came across some interesting epitaphs on tombstones about people’s lives.
In a Ribbesford, England cemetery:
The children of Israel wanted bread
And the Lord sent them manna,
Old clerk Wallace wanted a wife,
And the Devil sent him Anna.
In a cemetery in Hartscombe, England:
On the 22nd of June
– Jonathan Fiddle –
Went out of tune.
An epitaph on an English country churchyard tombstone of a woman who had an apparent tongue problem:
Beneath this stone, a lump of clay
Lies Arabella Young
Who on the twenty–fourth of May
Began to hold her tongue.
Finally here is the epitaph of Anna Hopewell of Enosburg Falls, Vermont:
Here lies the body of our Anna
Done to death by a banana
It wasn’t the fruit that laid her low
But the skin of the thing that made her go.
Memory of an accident in a Uniontown, Pennsylvania cemetery:
Here lies the body
of Jonathan Blake
Stepped on the gas
Instead of the brake.
On a grave from the 1880’s in Nantucket, Massachusetts:
Under the sod and under the trees
Lies the body of Jonathan Pease.
He is not here, there’s only the pod:
Pease shelled out and went to God.
In a cemetery in England:
Remember man, as you walk by,
As you are now, so once was I,
As I am now, so shall you be,
Remember this and follow me.
To which someone replied by writing on the tombstone:
To follow you I’ll not consent,
Until I know which way you went.
What Do You Want on Your Tombstone?
Hebrews 11:5 records the epitaph of a man named Enoch. It simply reads “he pleased God.” There is nothing finer that could be said of any person than that he or she pleased God. The very purpose of Great Commission Resource Centers (GCRC) is that we can reach the Unengaged Affinity Groups that are all around us.
GCRC is a concept whereby we can re-enter our culture through already existing affinity groups in which our members are already involved. Let your Regional State Missionaries come and share GCRC with you so your members can please God by reaching others!
