A Church Ablaze for God

By Steve Foster

“It takes more than a busy church, a friendly church, or even an evangelical church to impact a community for Christ. It must be a church ablaze, led by leaders who are ablaze for God.”

— Wesley L. Duewel

A church can be busy and still not be reaching people for Jesus.

A church can be friendly and still lack a burden for the lost.

A church can even be evangelical in its beliefs and yet fail to live with an evangelistic urgency.

The question is not simply, “Is our church active?”

The better question is: “Are we ablaze for God?”

A church that impacts its community for Christ begins with leaders whose hearts are burning for Christ.

Ablaze Leaders Pray for the Lost

They don’t simply talk about reaching people—they call people by name before the throne of God.

Ablaze Leaders Model Evangelism

They don’t just tell their church members to share the Gospel. They share it themselves.

Ablaze Leaders Create a Culture of Invitation

They continually remind the church that there are people all around us who need to hear the Good News.

Ablaze Leaders Equip Others

They understand that evangelism isn’t the responsibility of a few gifted people. Every believer has a part to play in making Jesus known.

Ablaze Leaders Refuse to Settle

They aren’t satisfied with activity without spiritual fruit. They long to see lives transformed by the Gospel.

Jesus said:

“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses…”

— Acts 1:8

The church doesn’t need more activity without passion. We need a fresh fire from the Holy Spirit.

May God raise up pastors, staff, deacons, teachers, and church members who are ablaze for God—people whose passion for Jesus is so evident that their churches cannot help but become more passionate about reaching their communities with the Gospel.

A church ablaze for God can become a church on mission for God.

Questions for Your Church

  • Are we busy—or are we truly on mission?
  • Are we friendly—or are we intentionally reaching people who are far from Christ?
  • Are our leaders modeling a passion for evangelism?
  • Who are the lost people we are praying for by name?
  • What would change if our entire church became ablaze for God?

Pray. Go. Share. Invite. Equip. Multiply.

Lord, set our hearts ablaze for You—and use Your church to impact our communities for Christ.
