Building Up the Whole Church

By Steve Foster

Every church member has a role to play in building a healthy, growing, Christ-centered church. It’s easy to think that strengthening the church is primarily the responsibility of pastors, staff, or ministry leaders. But the New Testament paints a different picture. The whole body of Christ is called to contribute to the health and mission of the church.

So, what can you do?

1. Pray Regularly

Prayer is one of the most powerful ways you can build up your church.

Pray for your pastor and leaders. Pray for your church family. Pray for spiritual growth, unity, revival, and opportunities to reach people who are far from God.

A praying church becomes a powerful church.

2. Disciple Others or Be Discipled

Every believer needs to be growing—and every growing believer should help someone else grow.

If you are spiritually mature, invest in someone who is younger in the faith. If you are still growing, find someone who can disciple and encourage you.

Discipleship is not simply a program of the church. It is the lifestyle of a growing believer.

3. Evangelize

The church grows stronger when its members take the Gospel beyond the walls of the church.

Look for opportunities to share your testimony, invite someone to church, have a spiritual conversation, and tell people about the hope you have found in Jesus.

A healthy church is always looking outward.

4. Celebrate God’s Work in Your Life

Don’t keep quiet about what God is doing.

Share answered prayers. Celebrate spiritual victories. Tell your church family how God is working in your life.

Your testimony may be exactly what someone else needs to hear to strengthen their faith.

Celebration creates encouragement, and encouragement strengthens the body.

A Simple Challenge

You don’t have to be a pastor to build up the church.

You don’t have to lead a ministry.

You don’t have to have all the answers.

You simply need to be faithful.

Pray.
Disciple.
Evangelize.
Celebrate.

Imagine what could happen if every member of the church intentionally practiced these four things.

The church wouldn’t simply attend together.

The church would grow together, serve together, reach together, and become stronger together.

Reflection Questions

  • Am I regularly praying for my church and its mission?
  • Who am I discipling, and who is discipling me?
  • Who is God placing in my life that needs to hear the Gospel?
  • What is God doing in my life that I can celebrate and share with others?

This Week’s Action Steps

  • Pray by name for three people in your church.
  • Encourage someone who is growing in their faith.
  • Look for one opportunity to share the gospel or invite someone to church.
  • Share one testimony of what God is doing in your life.

Healthy churches are built by healthy disciples who are willing to do their part.

Be the church member who helps build up the whole body.
