One Big Day: Preparing for a Friend-Day/Harvest-Day That Changes Lives
By Steve Foster
Every church dreams of seeing people come to faith in Christ. One of the most effective ways to create that opportunity is through a well-planned Friend/Harvest Day.
A Friend/Harvest Day is more than a special event on the calendar. Itโs an intentional strategy to mobilize your church to invite people in their circle of influence to hear the gospel and receive a clear invitation to follow Jesus.
Iโve preached Friend/Harvest Days in churches of every size, and one thing remains consistent: when churches prepare prayerfully and purposefully, God changes lives.
5 Steps to Preparing for One Big Day
-
Start with Prayer
Prayer lays the foundation for everything.
๐น Encourage members to pray daily for the Friend/Harvest Day.
๐น Provide cards for people to write down the names of friends and family they will pray for and invite.
๐น Open the altar before services and invite people to pray specifically for those who need Christ.
-
Promote the Day with Passion
People support what leaders celebrate.
๐น Begin promoting Friend/Harvest Day at least six weeks in advance.
๐น Share personal stories about who you are praying for and inviting.
๐น Equip Small Group leaders to champion the event.
๐น Provide attractive invite cards and digital resources for members.
-
Prepare Your First Impressions Team
Guests often decide how they feel about a church before the service begins.
๐น Cast vision to greeters, ushers, and parking teams.
๐น Walk through your facility with fresh eyes.
๐น Focus on cleanliness, signage, hospitality, and guest experience.
-
Build a Follow-Up System
A decision is the beginning, not the finish line.
๐น Train decision counselors before the event.
๐น Provide multiple ways for people to respond to the gospel.
๐น Create a clear process for connecting with guests and new believers after Friend/Harvest Day.
-
Preach a Simple Gospel Message
Friend/Harvest Day is about one thingโthe gospel.
๐น Keep the message clear and understandable.
๐น Explain how a person can be saved.
๐น Give a direct invitation for people to respond to Christ.
Questions for Leaders
๐น Who are we specifically praying will attend Friend/Harvest Day?
๐น Have we equipped our people to invite others?
๐น Is our guest experience ready for first-time visitors?
๐น Do we have a clear plan to follow up with every guest?
๐น Will the gospel and invitation be central to the day?
Action Steps
๐น Set a Friend/Harvest Day date on your church calendar.
๐น Begin a focused prayer campaign immediately.
๐น Challenge every church member to invite at least one person.
๐น Meet with your First Impressions Team this month.
๐น Review and strengthen your follow-up process.
๐น Prepare a gospel-centered message with a clear invitation.
One Big Day can make an eternal difference.
When Godโs people pray, invite, and faithfully share the gospel, we position ourselves to watch God do what only He can doโchange lives forever.
