One Big Day: Preparing for a Friend-Day/Harvest-Day That Changes Lives

Every church dreams of seeing people come to faith in Christ. One of the most effective ways to create that opportunity is through a well-planned Friend/Harvest Day.

A Friend/Harvest Day is more than a special event on the calendar. It’s an intentional strategy to mobilize your church to invite people in their circle of influence to hear the gospel and receive a clear invitation to follow Jesus.

I’ve preached Friend/Harvest Days in churches of every size, and one thing remains consistent: when churches prepare prayerfully and purposefully, God changes lives.

 

5 Steps to Preparing for One Big Day

 

  1. Start with Prayer

Prayer lays the foundation for everything.

🔹 Encourage members to pray daily for the Friend/Harvest Day.

🔹 Provide cards for people to write down the names of friends and family they will pray for and invite.

🔹 Open the altar before services and invite people to pray specifically for those who need Christ.

 

  1. Promote the Day with Passion

People support what leaders celebrate.

🔹 Begin promoting Friend/Harvest Day at least six weeks in advance.

🔹 Share personal stories about who you are praying for and inviting.

🔹 Equip Small Group leaders to champion the event.

🔹 Provide attractive invite cards and digital resources for members.

 

  1. Prepare Your First Impressions Team

Guests often decide how they feel about a church before the service begins.

🔹 Cast vision to greeters, ushers, and parking teams.

🔹 Walk through your facility with fresh eyes.

🔹 Focus on cleanliness, signage, hospitality, and guest experience.

 

  1. Build a Follow-Up System

A decision is the beginning, not the finish line.

🔹 Train decision counselors before the event.

🔹 Provide multiple ways for people to respond to the gospel.

🔹 Create a clear process for connecting with guests and new believers after Friend/Harvest Day.

 

  1. Preach a Simple Gospel Message

Friend/Harvest Day is about one thing—the gospel.

🔹 Keep the message clear and understandable.

🔹 Explain how a person can be saved.

🔹 Give a direct invitation for people to respond to Christ.

🔹 Have we equipped our people to invite others?

🔹 Is our guest experience ready for first-time visitors?

🔹 Do we have a clear plan to follow up with every guest?
