Seven Symptoms of a Dying Church

Churches rarely die overnight. More often, they decline slowly as unhealthy patterns become accepted as normal.

Thom Rainer identifies seven common symptoms found in churches that are losing their spiritual vitality. The encouraging news is this: God specializes in bringing dead things back to life when His people seek Him with humble hearts.

1. Continuous Battles

Conflict becomes the culture instead of the exception.

2. Numerical Declines of Three or More Years

A consistent decline may point to deeper spiritual issues that need attention.

3. Rooms as Idols

Buildings and classrooms become more important than the mission of reaching people.

4. Memorials and Plaques

The church celebrates yesterday’s victories more than today’s opportunities.

5. Prolonged Meetings

Endless discussions replace prayer, action, and making disciples.

6. Deflection of Blame

Everyone is responsible except those in the mirror.

7. Methodological Stability

“We’ve always done it this way” becomes more important than “How can we reach people today?”

Questions to Consider

• Are we protecting traditions more than pursuing the Great Commission?
• Is our church known more for conflict or compassion?
• Are we celebrating the past while neglecting the future?
• Are our meetings producing ministry or merely maintaining the status quo?
• If a lost person visited our church, would they sense a passion for Jesus and the Gospel?

Action Steps

• Pray for God to reveal any areas where your church has become inward focused.
• Ask the Lord to give your church a fresh burden for lost people.
• Evaluate every ministry by asking, “How does this help us make disciples and reach people with the Gospel?”
• Replace criticism with prayer and personal responsibility.
• Be willing to embrace biblical change if it helps fulfill Christ’s mission.

A dying church is never beyond the reach of a living Savior.

Revival begins when God’s people humble themselves, seek His face, and place His mission above their personal preferences.
