Sunday Morning on Mission

By Brad Marchman

Every Sunday, churches across the country gather to worship the Lord. But here’s an important question every pastor and church leader should ask:

What is happening in our Sunday morning worship service that is intentionally developing a culture of evangelism?

For many churches, Sunday morning is when more people are gathered than at any other time during the week. Yet, too often we miss this golden opportunity to keep the Great Commission before our people.

With intentional planning, every worship service can reinforce an outward-focused mission and cultivate a church where evangelism becomes part of the culture—not just another program.

1. Share a Sticky Vision

People remember simple, repeatable vision statements.

Develop a clear, concise statement that reminds your congregation why your church exists. Repeat it consistently—in worship services, meetings, publications, and conversations.

Examples might include:

  • Getting the Gospel to Every Corner of Our Community.
  • Every Member on Mission.
  • Reaching People. Making Disciples.

When your church hears the vision week after week, it begins to shape the way they think, pray, and live.

2. Include an Outreach Moment Every Sunday

Every service includes worship, prayer, preaching, and announcements. Why not intentionally include a brief Outreach Moment as well?

Just two or three minutes can remind your congregation that the mission continues beyond the church walls.

Ideas include:

  • A testimony of a recent Gospel conversation.
  • Someone sharing how they invited a friend to church.
  • A baptism story.
  • Prayer for lost people by name.
  • A short community needs video.
  • Promotion of an upcoming outreach opportunity.

These moments celebrate what God is doing and encourage others to join the mission.

3. Share the Gospel Clearly Every Week

Never assume everyone in attendance understands the Gospel.

Whether during the invitation, before the closing prayer, or woven naturally into the sermon, clearly explain:

  • Our need because of sin.
  • Christ’s death and resurrection.
  • Salvation by grace through faith.
  • The invitation to repent and believe.

Weekly Gospel presentations do more than reach unbelievers—they also train believers through repetition.

As members hear the Gospel consistently, they become more confident sharing it with others.

4. Send Your People on Mission

Don’t simply dismiss the congregation.

Commission them.

End each service with a practical challenge that keeps the mission fresh in their minds.

Encourage your church this week to:

  • Pray for someone who needs Jesus.
  • Invite a friend or neighbor to church.
  • Share their testimony.
  • Look for an opportunity to have a Gospel conversation.
  • Be intentional about living on mission every day.

A simple challenge reminds people that worship doesn’t end when the service concludes—it continues as they go into their homes, workplaces, schools, and communities.

Final Thoughts

Creating a culture of evangelism doesn’t happen by accident. It happens through intentional leadership and consistent reinforcement.

Every Sunday presents a tremendous opportunity to remind God’s people of His mission. As you intentionally weave evangelism into your worship planning, you’ll help cultivate a church where reaching the lost is not merely an event on the calendar but a way of life.

Don’t let Sunday morning become only a gathering.

Make it a launching pad for the Great Commission.

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…”

— Matthew 28:19
