The Power of a Personal Invite

By Steve Foster

One of the most effective church growth strategies I ever learned was surprisingly simple: a personal invitation.

In my last pastorate, we called a gifted Worship Pastor who helped transform our fellowship. He had previously served at a church in another state that experienced phenomenal growth. During his first week on staff, I asked him what contributed most to that growth.

Without hesitation, he replied:

“Invite Cards.”

He explained that their pastor had learned how open unchurched people are to attending church when personally invited. Determined to build a culture of invitation, the church placed a strong emphasis on inviting people every week. Within a few months, the number of guests attending services increased dramatically.

After praying and thinking about this principle, I decided we would make personal invitations a major part of our outreach strategy. The results were remarkable. We began seeing more first-time guests, new relationships were formed, and our church experienced healthy growth.

That experience taught me a valuable lesson:

Never underestimate the power of a personal invite.

How to Build a Culture of Invitation

Gain Buy-In From Leaders

Before asking the congregation to participate, ensure your staff and key lay leaders embrace the strategy.

Equip Your People

Provide invite cards and explain how they can be used. Encourage small group leaders to reinforce the vision.

Keep the Invitation Visible

Make inviting others a regular part of your Sunday morning emphasis. Consistency matters.

Preach on Invitation

Highlight biblical examples such as Andrew inviting Peter to meet Jesus in John 1:40–42. One invitation changed a life—and ultimately impacted the world.

Prepare for Guests

If more people come, be ready:

  • Train and expand your greeter team.
  • Strengthen first impressions.
  • Develop a hospitality team.
  • Create a clear Connection Center.
  • Establish a follow-up process through calls, texts, emails, letters, or guest luncheons.

Leverage Social Media

Provide shareable graphics and posts that members can use to invite friends to worship services, sermon series, and special events.

Questions for Church Leaders

  • Is your church intentionally creating a culture of invitation?
  • When was the last time you personally invited someone to attend church?
  • Are your members equipped with simple tools to invite others?
  • If guests showed up this Sunday, would your church be prepared to welcome and connect with them effectively?

Action Steps

  • Personally invite at least one person to church this week.
  • Place invite cards in strategic locations throughout your church.
  • Ask every small group leader to emphasize invitations during their next gathering.
  • Evaluate your guest experience from the parking lot to the worship center.
  • Create a social media graphic that members can easily share with friends and neighbors.

Develop a culture of invitation in your church and discover the power of a personal invite.
